Mike Tyson’s highly anticipated showdown with Jake Paul has hit a roadblock as it’s been postponed due to an unexpected ulcer flare-up. Medical experts specializing in ulcer treatment have weighed in on the chances of the rescheduled fight taking place later this year.

Initially slated for July 20 as part of a grand event streamed live on Netflix, Tyson and Paul were geared up for a professional face-off. However, plans took an unforeseen turn when Tyson encountered a medical emergency during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles, experiencing waves of nausea and dizziness.

Subsequent reports confirmed Tyson’s setback, attributing it to an ulcer flare-up, which rendered him unable to swiftly resume full training, consequently leading to the cancellation of the event.

While discussions about a potential replacement fighter have circulated, Tyson remains steadfast in his assurance to fans that the much-anticipated bout will indeed proceed later this year.

Following medical advice to ease his training regimen, Tyson has opted for a lighter approach under the guidance of healthcare professionals. USA Today reached out to seven esteemed gastroenterology experts for insights, although none among them are directly involved in Tyson’s treatment or privy to his specific case details.

Rama Behara, hailing from Texas, suggests a crucial three-week rest period for Tyson to facilitate recovery from his condition. “An untreated ulcer over time can erode deeper into the stomach and sometimes create a perforation in the entire wall, and that’s called a perforation,” he emphasized. “So when that happens, it can require emergency surgery to fix it.”

Adding to the perspective, Lawrence Kosinski, with four decades of experience in gastroenterology, stresses the importance of Tyson awaiting a four to six-week healing period to prevent the possibility of emergency surgery in case the ulcer worsens. This sentiment was echoed by two other medical professionals, while another emphasized that the timeframe depends on the size of the ulcer.

Looking ahead, Tyson is anticipated to encounter more discomfort as he returns to training. Despite maintaining a commendable physical shape, it’s crucial to acknowledge that Tyson, at 57, has acknowledged feeling “sore” recently.

As reported by boxing journalist Michael Benson, Tyson aims for the fight to transpire in the final quarter of 2024.
